Havells-Sylvania Brings Poetry to Light

Created to showcase the renowned poetry and culture surrounding its namesake, the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum has recently undergone a lighting scheme upgrade.

Featuring a variety of Concord architectural fittings by Havells-Sylvania, the new design highlights the stunning exterior and discreetly blends into the museum’s interior to show off the pieces of work on display.

Following a detailed brief from the client, David Hurst at Full-On Lighting Design developed a scheme which created as much of an impact on the exterior as it did on the interior. Outside, the SIMES architectural range is employed (for which Havells-Sylvania is the exclusive partner in the UK) with bollards providing welcoming light around the entrance of the museum. Similarly, compact, round SIMES 20W metal halide uplighters are used to wall wash the dry stone wall entrance facade creating a striking visual effect for visitors during the evening.

For the interior, David worked together with Havells-Sylvania to design a customised ‘lighting raft’ fixture that provided a first-class light source that also housed all system cabling and the museum’s PA system. Once the design was agreed a total of forty five rafts were connected into nine separate lines. Concord Continuum, with 200 Concord Torus spotlights were integrated with DMX control for infinitely flexible scene-setting possibilities.

“Between us all, I think we’ve created a truly innovative lighting scheme at the Burns Museum,” comments David Hurst. “The blend of fixtures and controls has opened up a wealth of lighting possibilities for the museum which can be utilised as the exhibits and displays change and evolve.”

It is not just in the main gallery that Havells-Sylvania products have been used; Concord LED 150 and Concord Decade Recessed products illuminate the shop and reception.

The museum itself is a modern building housing the world’s most important collection of Robert Burns’s life and works and is set in ten acres of the poet’s cherished Alloway countryside. Also part of the museum is the Burns Cottage where the poet was born, and gardens created in his honour.
