An office block in Edgbaston, Birmingham has recently undergone a £17m refurbishment programme to position it as one of the highest-quality, energy-efficient and accessible properties in the city.
445 Sylvania Rubico luminaires contribute to this impressive retrofit project by providing superb levels of light output across the five floors of the commercial property.
Specifying from Sylvania’s Rubico range of three different optics: a micro-prism optic (MPO), a louvre with Satin wings and a louvre with perforated edge, building engineering consultants, Couch Perry Wilkes (CPW) needed a lighting scheme that was in-keeping with the Grade A certified buildings’ new project performance requirements. Key criteria were; an improved design, energy-savings and cost-efficiency. The 140,000ft² commercial building now boasts a magnificent reception area with open plan areas, all lit with Sylvania’s superb luminaires.
“An EPC survey was carried out before the work commenced so we knew the energy-efficiency targets we needed to meet with the lighting scheme,” comments Claire Quigley, Senior Electrical Engineer at Couch Perry & Wilkes. “The client also wanted an aesthetically pleasing luminaire and not a drop basket model. The Sylvania Rubico has a high LOR and uses less than 2.2W/m² per 100 lux so we knew it would meet the our brief, whilst also meeting the owners specific design requirements.”
CPW conducted a full refurbishment across five floors of the building (7, 8, 9, 11 and 12) including all M&E services lighting, ventilation, power and fire alarm systems. The offices are all open plan and the lighting scheme is a plug and play system complete with local lighting control to allow the system to be easily configured if the layout of the office changes.
Rubico’s impressive specification delivers a lighting scheme that is extremely energy efficient by utilising fewer luminaires and daylight linked dimming. As standard, Rubico has both emergency and DALI-compatible control gear with an air-handling model available as special order. Importantly, all Rubico versions meet UK legislation BS EN 12464-1 (2011). The satin wing and perforated wing versions of Rubico also incorporate Sylvania COSS louvre 1595 technology for high performance and 98% reflectivity.
These options allow contractors and specifiers to deliver exactly the right brightness and light distribution required by the project. Sylvania Rubico is available in 600 x 600mm as well as 1200 x 300mm sizes for the MPO version.
Providing flexibility through offering a wide range of suite sizes to suit both small and large office occupiers, Hagley Road has been intelligently retrofitted to increase business compatibility. Now available with an on-site carpark, which can fit up to 268 vehicles, Hagley Road sets itself apart from Edgbaston’s office buildings with a car parking ratio four times better than equivalents and at half the cost. Amenities within the building have also been improved with the introduction of a coffee bar and serviced meeting rooms, which are now available.
