Effective Lighting Controls Must Keep Pace with Customer Demand

“This may seem like a strange thing to say as the Managing Director of a lighting control company, but lighting control companies are not, ultimately, the experts when it comes to how lighting should function to deliver maximum benefits to the building users. The real experts are, of course, the building users themselves.
Most lighting control systems are set up according to pre-defined commissioning instructions and then handed over. But it isn’t until the system is in use that we can really understand how it needs to operate to meet the specific demands of the environment. The best control systems are able to respond to feedback from building users and incorporate these changes with no disruption to day-to-day operations.

A recent installation of LiGO at Copenhagen’s largest teaching hospital with our partners Lindpro demonstrated how responding to feedback from users can create an optimal solution. The students and staff noticed that if they altered the scene settings in the classrooms they had to remember to press a ‘set’ button on leaving to make sure the room was left in the optimal energy saving setting. This is often referred to as ‘last touch.’ Open Technology quickly responded by adding a ‘fall back scene’ option to the LiGO web page. When this option is selected, the space automatically reverts to the ‘energy optimisation scene’ once the PIR sensors recognise that the area is unoccupied.
