Facilities Managers and Companies Failing to Take Advantage of Free Lamp Recycling Options

A survey of facilities managers and facilities management companies in the UK by lamp recycling specialist Recolight and FM World has found significant differences in attitudes to and awareness about lamp recycling.

Perhaps most surprising was the finding that 42% of FM companies surveyed continue to pay for lamp recycling, unaware that free recycling may be available to them through the WEEE Regulations.

Launched during the FM Show at the NEC in Birmingham, Recolight Chief Executive Nigel Harvey commented on the findings of the research:

“It was encouraging to see that 65% of facilities managers and companies we surveyed recycle all of the waste lamps that they collect. New targets set to come into force later in 2012 will mean more we have to recycle more, and FMs are a key channel for helping the UK meet its obligations. However, 14% of facilities managers and companies are not aware of the WEEE Regulations, and as such we are actively working with those across the UK to facilitate recycling for their waste lamps.”

Commissioned by Recolight and carried out by FM World, the official magazine of the British Institute of Facilities Managers, the research explored awareness of legislation as well as lamp recycling habits amongst facilities managers and facilities companies from across the UK.

The research found that 30% of facilities companies regularly collect large quantities of lamps, but 42% were paying for lamp recycling, when they do not necessarily need to. It also found that only 50% of respondents were aware that LEDs were in-scope of the WEEE Regulations. The recast WEEE Directive will specifically name LEDs as in-scope, and the Environment Agency already classes them as such.

Recolight has a range of free and convenient WEEE recycling options, depending on the amount of lamps collected each month. Collection of the containers once full, and recycling of all waste lamps, is completely free of charge including the full provision of consignment notes for duty of care purposes and access to fully accredited suppliers.

Nigel Harvey concluded:
“Whilst over half of the facilities managers and facilities companies we surveyed said that recycling was very important to their business, the fact that a significant minority (18%) only recycle half or less of the waste lamps they collect demonstrates that there is still room for improvement in the sector.”
