Hospital Upgrades with Specialist Cabling

A hospital chose AEI Cables' specialist cables when it came to the cabling of a major refurbishment programme. The screened wiring cable Protec will provide continuity of power for lighting, while Enhanced Firetec is being used for the fire alarm system as part of the project at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, Derbyshire.

Protec exceeds the requirements of BS8436 for use in walls, partitions and building voids where there is a risk of damage or penetration from nails or screws, and is a multi-purpose, future-proof cable ideal for industrial, commercial or domestic applications.

It has been designed by AEI Cables as a Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) screened cable which, due to its reduced electromagnetic interference, is also an ideal choice when electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is a priority. This is of particular importance in hospitals or where IT equipment may be used.

For the fire alarm system, the hospital chose Firetec Enhanced from AEI's fire performance range of cabling for its ability to provide continuity of power in a real-life fire scenario and time to enable a safe evacuation.

The cabling from AEI has been used in six wards and the rehabilitation unit at the hospital, part of a £1.4 million scheme benefiting around 450 patients every year and incorporating all stroke services into one purpose-built facility.

Main electrical contractor for the project was Parsons Electrical Ltd, Chesterfield, and distribution of the cables was by Edmundson Electrical Ltd, Chesterfield.
