Lighting Is At The Heart Of A Refurbished Church In Ilkley

Sacred Heart IlkleyThe Church of the Sacred Heart in Ilkley, a spa town and civil parish outside Leeds and Bradford, West Yorkshire, is benefitting from a revitalised lighting scheme using luminaires by architectural lighting specialist Concord.

The church has been through a complete refurbishment and has recently been awarded the Ilkley Civic Society Design Award.

The project was designed and overseen by local architectural practice, Overton Architects, and includes new oak pews to replace the previously uncomfortable benches, fresh lighting, upgraded sound system, flooring and improved accessibility and usability of the spaces. The church was presented with a Commendation Certificate in the Design category at the town’s Civic Society Design Awards. These annual awards recognise a variety of projects all of which succeed in making a valuable contribution to improving the townscape of Ilkley or its surrounding landscape.

For the new lighting scheme at The Church of the Sacred Heart, Overton Architects selected the Concord Beacon LED High Output 26W spotlights for the main areas of the church as well as a selection of small spotlights for key stations.

“We are delighted with the lighting scheme at the Church of the Sacred Heart, especially as the whole project won an award,” comments Mike Overton at Overton Architects. “We created the initial lighting design for the church, paying careful attention to the positioning of the fixtures to guarantee the best light quality. We then worked with Concord to transfer our drawn designs onto their lighting software to allow 3D images of the church and lighting levels to be established. It is always easy to work with Concord and the church is thrilled with the end result.”

The Concord Beacon LED High Output spotlight and floodlight range offers the church a high efficiency lighting solution that is as energy efficient as it is stylish. The cutting-edge cooling fin has been designed to maximise the thermal management and reduction of LED junction temperature. The spotlight has a IR/UV free light source to ensure the fabric of the building and furnishings are protected. With a long life of 50,000 hours the solution means the church has minimal maintenance requirements.

The Concord Beacon LED High Output is available in dimmable versions with on-board dimming, trailing edge and DALI as standard from 100-3%. The Church of the Sacred Heart is benefitting from trailing edge dimmable versions controlled via a RAKO wireless dimmer with scene setting, giving the users more control over the lighting scheme. The spotlights and floodlights within the range also have an energy efficient light source with far superior luminous flux per watt than existing low voltage halogen.
