Lumicom Takes the High Road to Recycling

LUMICOMAs part of a major road upgrade lighting project on behalf of Transport Scotland, Lumicom has been working with BEAR Scotland Limited to dispose of luminaires in accordance with WEEE Regulations.

Approximately 2000 old SON fittings, incorporating 250W lamps, have been replaced by new LED lanterns incorporating 150W units on dual carriageways and 75W units on single carriageway roads across the North of Scotland.   BEAR Scotland is a service provider in the Scottish roads maintenance sector and the company’s contract with Transport Scotland is to manage and maintain road networks that includes the upgrade and safe disposal of major, trunk road and motorway lighting.

Transport Scotland has considered a range of options to make its roadside electrical assets more sustainable and lighting accounts for 86 percent of energy consumption, which equates to approx. 31GWh per annum.  The change to a new super-efficient LED lighting scheme has calculated savings of 40 percent to date, making it the chosen option for the illumination of trunk roads around Scotland.

Lumicom, in partnership with BEAR Scotland have, so far, collected 4940kg of WEEE from the company’s Perth depot as part of an ongoing scheme to support the new lighting replacement project.  Craig Thom, sustainability advisor with BEAR Scotland commented “We find the Lumicom service very simple and straightforward to use.  All disposable WEEE brought back to the depot is stored safely in Lumicom’s purpose designed sacks and as soon as we have an adequate amount for collection we then contact Lumicom’s operations department to arrange a suitable day for pick up.   On collection, bags are automatically loaded by Lumicom’s purpose built trucks, immediately emptied and left on site ready for our next collection of luminaires.   Before the truck leaves our site, the Lumicom driver provides us with the necessary paperwork for our own audit trail so we always are aware of how much WEEE has been taken off site. Lumicom is extremely reliable and makes a very real contribution to the smooth operation of our depots”.
