BACnet MS/TP Module Extends Networking Options for Smart Power Analysers

BACnetCarlo Gavazzi has extended the networking options for its smart power analysers, with the introduction of a communications module providing BACnet MS/TP over RS-485.

The new communication module is the latest option for the company's innovative WM30 and WM40 smart power analyser family, providing interoperability with many small and inexpensive devices via this popular building automation protocol.

BACnet MS/TP module is available both for WM30 and WM40 and, in the latter case, optionally with on-board memory for load profiling for data/event logging. These meters feature a modular sandwich style design, which provides up to 70 percent more depth behind the panel. Users simply snap additional features to the rear of the meter by stacking and securing optional output and communication modules.

BACnet MS/TP provides new options for installers, in addition to existing BACnet IP, Ethernet TCP/IP and serial port options.

Introduction of the new module recognises the growing importance for BACnet for integrating energy management features in building automation systems. Using MS/TP over EIA-485 enables small local networks to be configured up to 1200m long using shielded twisted pair wiring.

As well as an RS-485 port, an auxiliary Ethernet port is included as standard for programming with WM3040Soft. As with the IP version, the MS/TP module provides a BACnet 'Device' object, whose properties describe what objects and services the device supports, together with device-specific information such as firmware version. Instantaneous electrical variables and energy measurements are available to the network as 'Analog Value' objects.
