Dieselec Thistle Provides Standby Power for Swan Centre

A newly re-vamped shopping centre in the West Midlands can continue to serve customers even in the event of a power cut thanks to a standby power installation from Dieselec Thistle.

The Swan Shopping Centre in Yardley, Birmingham is home to a wide range of high street retailers, along with anchor tenant, Tesco, in an undercover mall. In order to ensure business continuity for retailers in the event of a power outage, Dieselec Thistle has installed a 275 Kva standby generator which will support essential services in the event of a mains failure.

Dieselec Thistle developed the design and specification for the FG Wilson generator, including carrying out the design and installation of a bespoke acoustic enclosure to ensure that the standby power installation complies with local legislation on noise levels. The acoustic enclosure has reduced the noise levels from the generator by 40 dBA, achieving an operating noise level of 65dBA at one metre from the enclosure to comply with noise restrictions.

Comments managing director of Dieselec Thistle, Paul Moore: “In a retail environment a power outage means no EPOS, no lighting and no security systems so stores simply cannot trade. This installation means that retailers at the Swan Shopping Centre can continue to operate if the mains power goes down and, thanks to the acoustic enclosure, they can do so without any nuisance noise to their neighbours!”
