Stirling Prize Shortlist Announced

Four Arup projects make the 2012 RIBA Stirling Prize shortlist. The Sainsbury Laboratory, Cambridge, the Hepworth Wakefield Gallery, New Court Rothschild Bank, and the Lyric Theatre, Belfast have all been considered for what is regarded as the UK's most prestigious architecture prize.

Daylighting design for The Sainsbury Laboratory, Cambridge and the Hepworth Wakefield Gallery was seen by architects Stanton Williams and David Chipperfield Architects as being instrumental to the success of the projects. Both projects were recognised earlier this year in the Lighting Design Awards, which launched its inaugural ‘daylight’ category, suggesting a revived demand for daylighting specialist services.

“These projects demonstrate how a clear and well considered approach to daylight design can produce exemplary architecture… it is evident how daylight specialists working closely with architects can make a real difference.”

— Arfon Davies, Associate Director, Lighting Design, Arup

Celebrating architectural excellence, the Stirling Prize recognises the building that has made the greatest contribution to the evolution of architecture over the past year. The shortlist was drawn from 50 British projects and nine international projects receiving the 2012 RIBA National Awards.

This year’s RIBA Stirling Prize will be hosted by BBC Radio 4’s Mark Lawson at a ceremony at Manchester Central on 13 October.
