esp415m1Amendment 1 of BS 7671:2008 17th Edition Wiring Regulations now includes a key new section (534) for protection against transient overvoltages using surge protection devices (SPD’s).

Overvoltages from atmospheric origin (lightning) or electrical switching events can severely effect electrical installations and connected equipment.

The risks to life, buildings and electronics due to overvoltages are detailed within BS EN 62305 ‘Protection against lightning’ and can be reduced through the correct selection and installation of SPD’s in accordance with Section 534.

The new regulations were published on the 1 July 2011 and will come into effect on the 1 January 2012.  This means installations designed after 1 January 2012 will need to comply with amendment 1.
