Overview

Furse, a world leader in the design, manufacture and supply of earthing and lightning protection systems. Combining over 100 years’ experience with leading edge technical expertise, Furse is uniquely placed to offer a “Total Solution” to any structural lightning protection, earthing or transient overvoltage protection problem.

Our dedicated in-house team of accredited engineers not only design state-of-the-art products, but can design lightning protection and earth electrode schemes to the relevant British Standard (BS), or indeed any other recognised national or international standard.

Structural lightning protection

A structural lightning protection system is designed to protect the fabric of a structure and the lives of the people inside by channelling the lightning strike in a safe and controlled way to the earth termination network. Furse offers terminals, bases and clamps for the air termination network and an extensive range of down conductors and fixings.

Earthing
The earth termination network is the means though which the current is dissipated to the general mass of earth. Furse offer all the materials and fittings for an effective earthing system, including earth rods and plates, clamps and inspection pits.

Transient overvoltage protection

A single lightning strike up to 1km away from a building can cause sub-millisecond transient overvoltages of up to 6,000V on mains power, telephone and data communication lines. These can cause serious damage to unprotected electronic systems, including CCTV and alarm systems, telecommunications, PCs and computer networks. Furse extensive range of Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) protect electronic equipment from damage or disruption caused by direct lightning strikes, transient overvoltages from indirect lightning strikes and switching transients.

SPDs need to be fitted on all cables where they enter or leave a building, including mains power lines, ie on the mains power supply at the incoming distribution board(s), local distribution boards to protect important equipment and any electronic equipment outside the building, eg CCTV cameras.

New British Standard

The old British Standard (BS 6651) for lightning protection has recently been replaced by a new, more complex standard, BS EN 62305:2006 Protection against Lightning. Furse has created a comprehensive technical support package to help installers and relevant engineers to come to terms with complexities of this new standard.

The free Guide to BS EN 62305:2006 clearly explains the requirements of the new standard, whilst the Total Solution Product Catalogue covers the complete range of Furse lightning protection products. Furse organizes regional CPD-accredited seminars and we have also developed a bespoke risk assessment software, StrikeRisk v5.0, to save users time and effort navigating the complex new risk assessment process. We can also conduct a site survey, with written recommendations and cost implications, which is without obligation and free on mainland UK
