bsiA new Kitemark scheme for visual-alarm devices manufactured in accordance with EN 54-23:2010 has been launched by BSI, the UK's National Standards Body.

The scheme defines the requirements, test methods and performance of visual-alarm devices and complements the body's Kitemark fire portfolio for detection, fighting and suppression-product certification.

According to Safety and Health Practitioner, the institution said the initiative completes its "one-stop shop" for alarm manufacturers seeking testing and certification.

The Disability Discrimination Act requires the Responsible Person to ensure that reasonable adjustments are made to accommodate disabled people, including fitting visual alarms for the benefit of hearing-impaired people.

As a result, audible, vibrating and visual alarms that kick in in the event of a fire have become common and the scheme is aimed at ensuring the products are up to scratch.

In addition to taking such measures, building owners are legally required to conduct regular fire risk assessments, which are designed to help them identify potential dangers.
